Horitzons in Physics Education (HOPE)

Referència: 2013-3710_540130-LLP-1-2013-1-FR-ERASMUS-ENW
The objective of the HOPE (Horizons in Physics Education) project is to increase the impact of physics on the European socio -economic area. HOPE is a European project with a total budget of € 1.1 million, of which nearly 53% is financed by the European Commission. Coordinated by Nadine Witkowski of Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris [FR], together with Ivan Ruddock of Strathclyde University in Glasgow [UK], and Marisa Michelini of Università degli Studi di Udine in Udine [IT], this three-year project (2013-2016) is based on the collaboration of 71 partners from 31 European countries. They are mainly universities, but also a teacher association, CERN, the European Physical Society, the International Association of Physics Students and two private companies. Additional associated partners from European and non-European countries (USA, Brazil, India) complete the network.

HOPE is effectively the sixth thematic network in physics education in a series of networks beginning in 1996 with the European Physics Education Network (EUPEN). With an overall aim of enhancing the impact of physics within Europe and its visibility in society, the network will research and share good practice within four themes: the factors influencing young people to choose to study physics; physics graduates’ competences that enable them to contribute to the new needs of the European economy and society; the effectiveness and attractiveness of physics teaching in Europe’s university physics departments and their competitiveness in the global student market; strategies for increasing the supply of well-trained physics school teachers and for developing links between university physics departments and the teaching of physics in schools.

HOPE is an academic network funded within the Life Long Learning Programme (2007-2013), whose overall objective is to encourage the best use of results, innovative products and processes and exchange good practice in order to improve the quality of education and training.
